Joint Mission Aims to Advance Space Weather Science Amid Elevated Solar Activity
A joint European-Chinese satellite, designed to image Earth’s magnetic shield in X-rays, has launched on a Vega-C rocket, marking a significant milestone in space weather science. The Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer, or Smile, is a rare equal partnership between the European Space Agency and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The mission aims to provide a global view of the magnetosphere’s response to solar wind, which could lead to better forecasts and mitigation strategies for space weather events. The launch was reported by Space Daily.
